Q&A at the DE&I Session at TMA Annual Conference

While the TMA has long supported diversity, it first sought to formalize a global effort with a DE&I Task Force in 2021 under the leadership of then-TMA Global President Matthew English, CTP, Arch + Beam. The Task Force members participated in an extensive workshop, the No Nonsense Experience, led by Dr. David Pogue. The DE&I Task Force also developed a plan, goals and objectives for the future of the TMA’s diversity efforts. Many members of the Task Force joined TMA Global’s First DE&I Committee in 2022 and 2023, led by Committee Co-Chairs Jennifer Stam, Norton Rose Fulbright, and Angela Allen, Jenner & Block.

In 2024, leveraging the work of the members of that Task Force and the DE&I Committee, TMA launched a TMA Global DE&I Playbook to serve as a guide and compilation of best practices already underway across our chapters and globally in areas such as governance, events, recruiting and retention, and opportunities for partnerships.

Today, the TMA Global DE&I Committee serves as a resource to chapter leadership and a connection point for chapters that may consider partnering and collaborating across efforts and ideas. In 2024, Janine Figueredo, Thompson Coburn LLP, took over as Vice President of the DE&I Committee.

The importance of DE&I

  • The significance of DE&I is in many ways, personal
  • It is also economic and makes good business sense
  • Our population and workforce are increasingly diverse – encouraging participation, success and growth in the turnaround industry by diverse members will only strengthen our profession and our ability to serve our clients
