WHEN COLLEGES FAIL THEMSELVES:
WHAT HAPPENS AS A TURNAROUND
EVOLVES INTO A WIND DOWN

A Virtual Education & Networking Program Featuring CTTMA Annual Sponsor:

Our Program
Join your CTTMA colleagues for a lunch, learn & networking hour. For this session, CTTMA Annual Sponsor, Bert Weil, Managing Director, bio at Getzler Henrich & Associates will take us on a journey into the higher education sector. Though the COVID-19 emergency has battered many industries, it was not the beginning of what currently besieges colleges and universities. Issues have been brewing beneath the surface of these proud institutions for a long time. For instance at the outset of 2012, the College of New Rochelle, a 105-year-old institution, missed its first payroll tax remittance of its combined $20 million total missed remittances. Before closing its doors in 2019, a $33.8 million fraud would be uncovered, the College's Controller would be given a 3 year prison sentence, and ordered to pay restitution.

Restructuring and/or winding down a higher education institution has risks, exposures, and burdens far more complex than the wind down of "normal" for-profit organizations. The discussion will address:

    • Academic wind down and "Teach-out" obligations
    • Closed School Discharge liabilities
    • Dealing with Title IV funding, the Department of Education and various other accrediting agencies
    • Retention of student transcript records
    • Corporate veil-piercing exposure to trustees and officers
    • Limited insolvency option

This is sure to be a fascinating and well spent lunch hour as Bert takes us on the roller coaster ride of a lifetime. Our program concludes with an optional "open mic" session where you'll be able to highlight your firm's latest activities, followed by breakout room general networking. See you on November 1st at Noon!
